Since the 3rd Energy Package came into effect, the level of activity in our field has been unprecedented. Smart metering and the smart grid have become centre stage in Europe. Not only driving key business strategies, but also driving change across every aspect of the energy industry.
Utilities are at various stages of their smart metering implementation plans. R&D initiatives are being prepared, smart metering projects developed and rollouts implemented. To make these things happen, regulatory issues have to be evaluated and standards developed. Customers are becoming aware of these changes and are being more and more drawn into influencing their energy usage.
Metering, Billing/CRM Europe 2010 in Vienna proved once again to be the platform to discuss the latest developments, solutions and benchmarks in the utility industry. For the over 3800 professionals who attended, the discussion was no longer about “WHAT” to do, but rather about “HOW” to do it.
Key questions on the minds of the participants included:
- How to implement a smart communication infrastructure?
- How to handle the massive increase of data available?
- How to ensure system security and data privacy?
- How to use your data for value added services?
- How to enhance your billing operations?
- How to engage your customers in the project?

With over 50 international case studies presented, here were many lessons to draw on from the pioneering utilities and companies leading the way in Europe and around the globe.
In the course of the 3 days it became clear that this new “HOW” paradigm is also leading to a new spirit of competition between involved parties, both between vendors and utilities. The Official Opening Session, where both discussions and voting results stated that 63% of the audience is not convinced smart metering targets will be met by 2020, clearly showed the need for high level discussions on “how” to ensure targets will be met. This way also reflected by the record number of 220 international utilities represented at this 12th edition of Metering, Billing/CRM Europe. And with more than 120 high level speakers and over 160 exhibitors, the event was packed and the buzz of enthusiasm was enormous!
